Yao approaches ceramics through the experience of everyday use. Working entirely by hand rather than on the potter’s wheel, he builds his vessels from thin slabs of clay, carving lines and patterns directly into the surface.
Line and a sense of wholeness are central to Yao’s work. Patterns travel across the vessel without interruption, extending even to the base, where he deliberately leaves out his signature. He gives equal consideration to the integrity of the work and its everyday use.
CARE
Crazing, crystallization, and small dark spots are inherent to the glazing and firing process.
- Clean promptly after use
- May absorb pigments from tea or coffee
- Avoid metal utensils to reduce surface scratching
- Avoid sudden temperature changes
- Not recommended for dishwasher
- Do not place in microwave or oven.
